Technosignatures Across Scales: A Kardashev–Barrow Framework for Exoplanetary to Interstellar Signatures
To the point
An expansive review surveys technosignatures from Earth to far beyond, using Kardashev and Barrow scales to organize signs—from surface and atmospheric indicators to orbital patterns, stellar modifications, interstellar signals, and universal concepts—and covers exoplanetary technosignatures, compact objects, interstellar communication and travel, and the broader search space, while highlighting synergies with biosignature searches, anomaly detection, and multimodal strategies and detailing the instruments, evaluation frameworks, prioritization, and epistemological questions involved in assessing technosignatures, led by Clément Vidal with colleagues from a Penn State SETI Symposium workshop in 2023, in a 118-page manuscript submitted May 20, 2026.
