Bill Diamond, president and CEO of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, says the latest releases contain nothing scientifically valid or compelling evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth and do not constitute proof of visitation. He emphasizes that extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof and notes that vast interstellar distances make real-world contact unlikely, at least given current understanding. Diamond points out that many sightings arise from accidental observations and have not been subjected to systematic, rigorous analysis that could yield firm conclusions. He adds that while SETI has extensive observational assets, there is no funding or coordinated program to monitor airspace for such phenomena. Sightings can be optical illusions, physical objects, experimental aircraft, or birds, and should not be hastily attributed to extraterrestrials without careful study. He acknowledges that planets are ubiquitous and that roughly 30% of stellar systems could harbor habitable environments, making it statistically unlikely we are alone, but stresses that evidence is still lacking. If something compelling were found, Diamond says, it would be evident, underscoring the ongoing, careful search rather than premature conclusions.
