Proxima Centauri b: A Nearby Test Bed for Habitability and the Near-Term Search for Alien Life
To the point
Proxima Centauri b is a nearby rocky planet in the habitable zone of a red dwarf, probably tidally locked with a narrow twilight belt where liquid water could exist if heat is distributed, and while stellar superflares threaten its atmosphere a magnetic field or volcanic replenishment could maintain it so scientists can search for signs of life with JWST and future observatories by around 2030, keeping in mind that oxygen can arise abiotically and a robust biosignature requires gases out of chemical equilibrium, and even without life the study will sharpen our understanding of habitability around red dwarfs and guide future space exploration beyond Proxima b.
