Most of the 144 UAP sightings reported from 2004–2021 remain unexplained due to limited data, with only one case confidently identified as a large deflating balloon and others possibly resulting from sensor errors, misperceptions, foreign or non-government technology, or mundane explanations, there is no evidence of alien spacecraft, and the effort aims to destigmatize UFOs and promote rigorous, data‑driven science that could attract more researchers, a shift welcomed by Chris Impey.
