Nineveh’s Cuneiform Legacy: Enuma Elish, Creation, and the Anunnaki in Ancient Astronaut Debates

To the point

Tablets unearthed at Nineveh by Austen Henry Layard include Enuma Elish, a Babylonian creation epic in which Marduk shapes the world and humanity, and while mainstream scholars view it as myth, some ancient astronaut theories claim the Anunnaki were real beings who arrived from space to aid humanity, including Aryan ancestors.

Enuma Elish and Ancient Aliens

Nineveh, Iraq, yielded a treasure trove of cuneiform texts during an archaeological expedition led by Austen Henry Layard, including the palace of Sennacherib and later that of Ashurbanipal, with tens of thousands of tablets uncovered. Among them are tablets containing the Enuma Elish, the Babylonian creation epic that recounts Marduk taking blood from Kingu and, with clay, fashioning the earth and the first humans. The epic’s account extends the biblical narrative, offering a broader version of the creation story in which Adam appears, with the Bible having left out many details. Mainstream scholars view Enuma Elish as an ancient creation myth, while some ancient astronaut theorists argue it encodes factual events about visitors from space. The term Anunnaki, meaning “from heaven to earth,” is used to describe beings in these tablets who are said to be flesh-and-blood, arriving in giant spacecraft and interacting with humanity. The tablets portray a civilization that seems to have sprung up in unexpected ways, and the Anunnaki are described as physical beings who were perceived as divine by our ancestors. The narrative also suggests that Aryan ancestors reportedly received assistance from these higher beings arriving from above.
