On Apollo 12 in November 1969, images from the lunar surface show unidentified lights in the sky near the horizon, including a vertical blue haze and a photo where three distinct lights appear, as well as another image with a blurry smear and another with two pairs of barely visible luminous specks. Alan Bean, an Apollo 12 astronaut, reported seeing particles of light flying off into space through a periscope-like viewer, a sight he could not explain. Although still images cannot convey the rapid skyward motion described, the records confirm the witnesses were not hallucinating and remained puzzled. A later Apollo 17 photograph from 1972 shows three dots in a triangular formation near the horizon. The DoD notes there is no consensus on what the anomaly is, but its analysis suggests the feature could be a physical object in the scene. NASA emphasizes that unexplained phenomena are not evidence of alien life, and the government has offered possible explanations such as electromagnetic interference, glare, or optical effects, though no definitive explanation has emerged.
