3I/ATLAS: A Methanol-Rich Interstellar Object Revealing Clues About Alien Worlds
To the point
Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, spotted in July 2025 with the ALMA telescope, shows unusually high methanol in its coma and hydrogen cyanide mainly from the nucleus, with methanol released from both the nucleus and icy grains—a first for an interstellar object—hinting it formed in colder conditions or with a chemical makeup different from solar-system comets, while its tail emits X-rays from solar wind interactions; it is the third known interstellar visitor after Oumuamua and Borisov, and Nathan Roth says observing it is like taking a fingerprint from another solar system, offering a rare glimpse into the building blocks of distant planets.
