A drifting flight with almost all systems off led to an unidentified object appearing in front of the craft; it was seen as a white cylindrical shape with a white hole protruding from one corner, roughly the size relationship of a beer can with a smooth pencil sticking out. Distinguishing its distance or real size was impossible, since perception in space is unreliable without a known scale. To avoid a possible collision, the flight control electronics warmed up, and two cameras were grabbed to photograph the object; as the sun began to shine on the window, the thing disappeared and could not be located again. After landing in the Atlantic Ocean, the films were flown back to Houston, where the photos were reviewed and nothing like the object appeared in any frame. NORAD radar showed nothing within a close range of the tracking, and despite later publication of some images, none matched what was seen. The object remained unidentified, and no one else was able to determine what it was.
