During hypnosis sessions, he recounts being abducted by aliens he called star people, and he now believes he acted under instructions from beings from outer space. He describes a hunting trip in the Teton Mountains of Wyoming in which nine hours of missing time occurred; he recalls being picked up and set down about nine miles away on October 7, 1973. In 1976 he begins reporting cattle mutilations, telling the sheriff about several incidents and providing photographs. Within a day or two after those events, they start hanging out on the ranch, waiting for people they believe came from Laramie or elsewhere to kill their cows, skin them, and perform other bizarre acts.
