Japan formed a nonpartisan group of more than 80 lawmakers, including former defence minister Yasukazu Hamada, who says it’s irresponsible to ignore the unknown, to treat unidentified anomalous phenomena as a security issue requiring scientific study and strengthen detection to align with allies after drone intrusions and possible surveillance balloons, while seeking a U.S.-style AARO and greater intelligence cooperation with the United States, a move Christopher Mellon welcomes as addressing new security challenges from drones and AI and noting a hotspot spanning western Japan to China.
